Every person’s body has an incredible capacity to heal;
we just need to find the right inputs to help restore balance.
My name is Miriam Jacobson, MS, RD, CNS. I am a clinical dietitian and use functional medicine as the foundation to best assess and understand systematic imbalances that lead to digestive problems, slow metabolism, anxiety and depression.
I understand and empathize with my clients’ stories because I too have suffered. I lost my father at a very young age; the stress that trauma combined with poor eating habits took a terrible toll on my health. I felt bloated, tired and anxious. At age 20 I would lay in bed at night crying from arthritic pains that my doctor told me didn’t really exist. All I wanted was to live in a life where I slept soundly at night and woke up refreshed; I wanted a body that wasn’t bloated or in pain. I dreamt of feeling light, graceful and healthy. For a long time, I thought that if I ignored the issue it would miraculously disappear. This was not the case. Healing myself challenged me to redefine the relationship I had with myself, my grief and with food. At the heart of this transformation was building my self worth. Once I truly valued myself it empowered me to treat my body with love and care. I can help you to do the same.
Feeling a loss of control over your health is alarming. In our current climate, health needs have evolved and this is an area where conventional medicine has fallen short. I still believe that Western acute health care is lifesaving and essential. But we need to change our approach to medicine as our needs have shifted. Living disease free is no longer the highest standard; my mission is to help you live a full and engaged life where you feel balance in your body and mind. Prescription medications that mask symptoms create more imbalances and can be dangerous and addictive. Through functional medicine I can identify root causes that impact our health on a physiological and cellular level. This is the most effective way that we can regain control and optimize our health.
The first step is to take action. Say yes to the opportunity to change and create a powerful shift in your life. You have the ability to manifest the life you want, but you need to be proactive. The “I will start tomorrow” excuse is all too familiar – try replacing that thought with “I will start today”. That is an empowering choice. That is how you begin to create a healing shift in your life.
I earned my undergraduate degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. After completing my clinical training through North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, I discovered that I wanted to work with clients before they became ill. I realized that I could best serve patients by not only helping to prevent chronic conditions, but also by optimizing their health and helping them find a fulfilling, engaging and more authentic version of themselves.
This desire drove me to earn my master’s degree in functional medicine and integrative nutrition from the University of Bridgeport. I have found that using the functional medicine paradigm is powerful tool to restore balance and create sustainable changes in health in order to help people access their full potential and live life in a full and meaningful way.
When I am not studying or working, you can find me on my yoga mat (where I also hold a 200 RYT certification), whipping up some scrumptious and healthy recipes or exploring the beauty and expanse of Los Angeles.
